2008 Prime Time Steelhead Auction
In 2007 we raised close to $100,000 for wild salmon and steelhead causes here in British Columbia. The projects we funded ranged from genetics work on the Babine to helping the Gitanyow First Nation with its legal work to protect failing Kitwanga sockeye stocks. Bottom line is that is that our donations and letter writing helped make a difference. I am also happy to say that our efforts were entirely volunteer based. Administration costs were $0.00.We have seen considerable progress on all fronts. As a direct result of concern from First Nations, anglers, guides and businesses owners, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Ministry of the Environment have initiated an independent science review and economic analysis of the Skeena fishery. This is being conducted by the Pacific Salmon Foundation. This extensive review will help government understand where change is needed to fix the problem of failing wild salmon and steelhead stocks here on the North Coast.
That will likely mean full implementation of the Wild Salmon Policy with movement toward a more selective and sustainable fishery here on the Skeena. That should mean that we see management of the fishery for weak sub stocks of salmon and steelhead. They are clearly in trouble all over the watershed.
Thousands of letters and emails got us to this point but it is only a beginning. In the event we do see a commitment to better management, we should follow up with emails to thank D.F.O. and M.O.E. for taking salmon management on the North Coast in a different direction from the rest of the world. The Wild Salmon Policy is after all their baby so credit is due.In short, I think the future looks much brighter for wild steelhead and salmon here on the North Coast.
Finally we have set aside a number of trips for auction in the 2008 season. Our goal for 2008 is to raise another $100,000 for wild steelhead and salmon conservation causes here in Northern B.C.
Our website, www.bcgold.org (as in our salmon and steelhead are worth more than gold) will be live July 1 with details on how funds were used in 2007, what we will raise funds for in 2008 and finally a live auction tool for trips and donated items. If you are not interested in a trip or auction items, direct donations are welcome. Additionally if you would like to donate a trip or item, please email for more information. I'd also like to thank the North Coast Steelhead Alliance for its continuing help with these efforts.
